Aspiring Vegan ATHLETE.

4 Aug

As a concious eater who gulps down kale and carrot juice, has children who flip through Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World during breakfast and blogs about incorporating aspects of veganism into your every day-to-day, it’s surprising to me that I’ve only written once about excercise/fitness. It was in January and featured the squat.

After training with an incredible trainer for about six months, and watching my post-pregnancy, vegan body evolve into one of more strength and balance, my trainer left the chain gym I belonged to.

But I followed him, as he opened a fitness studio in an end unit of a shopping center. He opened a Crossfit studio.

The most intense, insane and challenging ‘workout’ I have ever experienced. When I tell you that some days you will fall to the ground after a 7 minute and 49 second workout, I am not exaggerating. Squats, handstands, kettlebells, ‘clean and jerks’ – it’s a whole new vocabulary that day after day makes sense.

What’s more powerful than making the decision to fuel your body with fresh, pure food than to challenge yourself physically every opportunity you can?

I am a full-time marketing and PR manager, a mom of two, entrepreneur and writer, and I am committed (or addicted?!) to fitting Crossfit into my day-to-day, 5 days a week. 6AM? no problem. 8PM? No problem. While I will always consider myself an aspiring vegan, my newest focus is aspiring athlete!

Trust me, your first class will kick your tush, but will shape you up real fast. It’s not just the variety of the workouts, it’s the comraderie you will find as you cheer each other on when the last of your 5,000 meter row is upon you. Your perception of your strengths and capability will shift- I’ve realized I am capable of so much more that I ever imagined.

Today, I start the Brendan Brazier THRIVE meal plan to ensure that this athletic version of myself can keep up with and recover from the daily workouts. Haven’t heard of Brendan Brazier? Check out this amazing Ironman, who is vegan and mostly raw.

Buy the book, check out a crossfit studio near you and watch a few youtube videos featuring the crossfit games.

Point is, today, challenge yourself mentally and physically. You are making a conscious, valiant effort already in being your best self, now put the icing on your vegan cake and ensure that every inch of you is benefitting.
