New Year Refresh Week 2: Squatting Vegans

GymFu.com image for the proper squat technique.

When I began training a few months back, the zero body fat gentleman who I gave two mornings a week to said first and foremost that if he were stranded on an island and could do one excercise the rest of his life, “It would be the squat.”

The workouts my trainer has devised for me contain dozens of squats. Whether I am doing floor work or cables, the form and function of the squat plays the key role.

A proper squat is what dreams are made of. I turn to my 18-month old for advice on this subject. Summer can sit in squatting position for minutes. It’s instincual for her to plop into a squat and firmly stand back up, repeatedly.

I found a great youtube video which loops a proper squat. Try this at home, in front of a mirror, and be mindful of your knees bending perfectly over and in line with your feet. Or, seriously go and ask a local gym or training studio what it would cost for 6 sessions with a trainer. You will be thankful when that $200 bucks gives you the strength, confidence and posture to workout on your own four days a week. Or, simply ask for one or two sessions for an at-home simple workout that would involve a few stretches and floor work to make sure your form is good.

Snow fell in NY this morning, and believe it or not, I was a lone ranger at the gym. iPod cranking, machines empty, I had a superb workout. Thanks to my trainer, of course, who prepped me weeks ago to be alone and confident in the weight room. And, thanks to the squat.

[...] As a concious eater who gulps down kale and carrot juice, has children who flip through Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World during breakfast and blogs about incorporating aspects of veganism into your every day-to-day, it’s surprising to me that I’ve only written once about excercise/fitness. It was in January and featured the squat. [...]
